My Favorite Things ATC Swap

These cards began as a watercolor paper print of mono prints that I had created on gelli plates. When I'm mono printing, I find that there are some prints that I just LOVE and I will scan them so that I can use them in art in the future. The backgrounds I've used here I have used as paper, as digital buttons for events, and as ATC backgrounds.

Next I heat embossed the cards with some of my favorite Globecraft & Piccolo Craft Emboss Powders. I used adhesive to emboss the edges. Next I sprinkled some emboss powder on the surface of the watercolor ATC and then heat set from below so that the emboss powder looked more random...creating interesting patterning.
Finally I tangled on my ATC. Zentangling and doodling is my happy place and one of my all-time favorite things. I can relax and breathe when I tangle. It seemed appropriate that my two series of Favorite Things ATCs contain tangles!
Each series contained a total of 4 cards and were swapped with friends across the country. It's always fun receiving art from others and ATCs are easy to make and share! I hope you try some of your own!

Be the Change ATC
Happy Friday everyone! Altered Pages has a number of metal sheets that are perfect to use with your emboss folders and markers to create stunning effects and embellishment. With your alcohol markers you can customize all of your charms and embossed bits to match any project. Alcohol inks/markers are not just Copics and Ranger inks but also Spectrum Noir, BIC Mark-its and Sharpies! Use 91% Isopropyl Alcohol for your "blending solution" to get cool dropped effects and blends.
I would recommend coloring your metal black before running it through and then add other colors back on. and flick on alcohol with a tooth brush or paint brush! Metal bits are easily adhered to any surface with your favorite heavy body glue.

Test Driving the Faber-Castell Floral Gallery kit at Altered Pages
Happy Friday everyone~! I wanted to share with you the fun I've been having with the five little pencils in the Faber-Castell Floral Gallery Kit that I got through AlteredPages.com. This is a great kit to introduce you to watercolor pencils and watercoloring on canvas. It comes with a terrific instruction booklet that goes through various techniques that you can use with these pencils. It includes 4 pre-drawn boards for you to color and also a "practice" palette board to experiment with the colors.
Following the directions in the book on getting a range of colors from the five pencils, I proceed to test drive the colors in a traditional manner. I colored lightly and with more vigor onto the rectangles of the canvas and then applied water to my brush [included in the kit] and activated the pigment that I had laid onto the canvas. [first two rows above]. Then I proceeded to see what colors I could create with the 5 pencils I had. I was impressed at the range of colors with just adding equal parts of color--of course there are millions depending the percentage of each color that you add to the mix.
In the instruction booklet, it was also suggested that you could use a piece of paper as a palette to mix the colors and then apply THAT to the canvas...in the bottom 3 rows of the canvas board in the previous photo is what the paper pallet colors looked like...they have a super pastel feeling quality to them. Again, it was easy to get a terrific range of color with this technique. My only recommendation here is to be generous with the water. On paper your color easily soaks into the paper once activated with water--you need more water to have paint to apply to the canvas!
After my "test drive" I decided to work on one of the canvases that looked similar to a sunflower. Since I had used my pencils considerably playing and checking out the colors, I needed to sharpen them--there is a wonderful little sharpener included in your kit. Of course I did not want to waste the shavings that were made and so I dumped them gently into a little paint pallet and used them to mix and create the sunflower canvas.
Working from the background to the foreground I first layered washes and then more concentrated colors to bring out the details of the flowers. Many stop with just the application of color onto these little canvases but I find I like a little doodling with my watercolor.
I pulled out a variety of sizes of Sharpie Markers and proceeded to tangle my favorite flowers over the watercolor. I LOVE the effect. The Sharpies worked beautifully over the Faber-Castell Aquarelle watercolors and canvas. The kit comes with 2 flowers that look sunflower like and 2 that look Tiger Lily like. My plan is to gesso the tiger lily boards and make more sunflowers so that I have 4 happy sunflower panels!

Altered Spoon Blog Hop | Happy Blogiversary Susan!!

It is important to sand the spoon before painting it to provide a smooth surface for tangling with makers--I used both Zig Millennium Pens and BIC Mark-Its for tangling!!

For my spring project I combined a couple of my favorite things! I love Steampunk that IS why we're here after all! I love projects with eggs--it's very springing and fun to do. I love Zentangling, and in particular I am highly inspired by the work of Sandra Strait--who also happens to be a teammate of mine on the Viva Las Vegastamps! Design Team! Her work is amazing. She recently wrote an article for VLVS about how she creates her Steampunk tangles that she does with the awesome Steampunk Stamps available through Viva Las Vegastamps! This article inspired me to create some of the original tangles that Sandra made on my own project!!
The process of creating this design is available to watch in a video that I created this evening while filling in for my friend and co-streamer Amanda Marks. I hope you enjoy it!note to train hobbyists: the rubble that I refer to is really ballast my train-hobbyist son corrected me! Thank you Will for helping Mommy look smarter! :)

Crafty Ribbons Challenge #7 | Tags!
It's time again for a Crafty Ribbons Challenge. For this challenge we are doing TAGS! At Crafty Ribbons they have this amazing printed grosgrain that is a generous 2½" wide! It's printed with trees and presents and makes a perfect gift tag to be added to any present!
To create my tag, I attached the ribbon to a Kraft tag and tangled borders on the top and bottom of the front. I then created a To/From tangle and made a border with dots and a matching grosgrain ribbon that measures 5/8". I completed my tag by adding a 1/8" green grosgrain to attach my tag to the present!

When Gill mentioned doing this blog hop, SO MANY ideas came to mind...something with ribbon, something with bling, perhaps some ornaments--my favorite things!
As I am in full holiday prep mode at this point of the year, my favorite things revolved around the holidays...making things to decorate my home. So for your viewing pleasure I'd like to share with you a couple of my favorite things for the upcoming Holiday season crafted using my favorite crafty thing--recycled materials and GLITTER!! I hope you enjoy!

This little owl ornament is super easy to make out of toilet paper roll tubes. I also enjoy the art of zentangling very much and thought it added a nice touch to this little guy! Below is one of the most versatile products I've seen to date. Not only can magazines and travel brochures be recycled into beads and tubes and baskets and place mats, but they can be folded into some amazing holiday decor. This holiday I have an image stuck in my head of little trees all over my house. I really like how these turned out with the folded pages left natural and the edges dusted with green glitter!!

Zentangled Box | a special leslierahye's crafty gig late night
Yesterday afternoon I decided to relax in the evening and work on a wooden box that I had started on a ustream a week ago. I had painted the box, set it aside to dry and then forgot about it! ha! I finished my stream and looked to the side and there sat my little gold box! Below you will find a special late night stream I did of tangling on the box. I have some work to do on the sides but the top is FINISHED! I love it and wanted to share it with you all! I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Today brings me back to my centering passion...zentangles...I have be absent from the Weekly Challenge of Zentangles for a while over at the I am the Diva challenge blog. My body feels it--it's yoga for the brain and my brain of late has felt stiff. So for myself I tangle this tile. I hope you enjoy it. It was actually LAST weeks challenge and the new challenge for the week has already started! lol
