Prejudice is a burden art journal page with Rebecca Baer®

Good Morning! Today I've created a journal page using Rebecca Baer™ Stencils and brushes. Rebecca's small stencils are perfect for art journaling and her brushes are a dream to work with.

For this project I began by laying down a thin coat of gesso on my mixed media paper so that my inks and colors rest on top of the surface rather than absorbing down into the paper. This way use less product to achieve the deep colors I love.  Using a wide brush in the RB Classique™ Angles set, I brushed thinly and quickly but completely to get a full coverage.

Next I applied watercolor crayons to the surface with no particular pattern in mind. You will see below that once water is applied and the colors are all blended it looks NOTHING like the pattern. I used the RB Classique™ Angles brush to get a smooth blend of the colors.

Next I grabbed my Mixed Elements Honey Comb Small Stencil [I just can't get enough of this stencil]  and began layering mists on the background I had created. For this technique I applied a LOT of mist in some areas and dried it with my heat tool to create those darker pools of ink.

For this journal page I will share a quote and only need a single element to the side that enhanced my page. I love this Blooming Daisy Stencil| ST-502 in the medium size for this project. It's almost the full size of the page and it complements well with the whole natural feel of the Mixed Elements Honey Comb stencil that I've used. Using gesso I painted several layers through the solid part of the stencil to provide a lighter area to paint over the sunflower so that it will pop rather just blend in. There is so much ink on this page that the wet of the gesso mixes with and activates the mist below making the gesso appear blue green!

Next I layer on acrylic paint to color the daisy to look like a sunflower using the small brushes in the RB Classique™ Angles set

Using the tip of the brush I added little "seeds" to my center.

Using the detail portion of the Blooming Daisy Stencil I misted a copper sparkly color, blotted it and then went back with a white mist...you can just see a hint of the details. I printed off my quote, misted it lightly with the colors I had used, cut it apart and adhered it to the page.

Finally to add some pop to the colors I went around the words with a white paint pen and a Payne's grey brush pen. I added Payne's grey to the edges of the Daisy as well to help it pop!

I hope you enjoyed my art journal page today! All supplies mentioned are available In Rebecca Baer's® store at the link below! Thank you for stopping by! Be sure to check out posts from my teammates each Tuesday and Thursday!

Tutorial | Mixed Media Initial Canvas with Design Memory Craft Faber-Castell

Good evening everyone! leslierahye here to share with you this fun canvas that I made for my Samantha [aka Fancy Pants] with the beautiful Cheery Lynn Designs Dies and the scrumptious Faber-Castell Gelatos and Aquarelle Watercolor Pencils. We have been redoing the kids' room and the wall just screamed for some initial art! I hope you enjoy my project!
To create your own initial canvas
Assorted Cheery Lynn Doily and Flower Dies
8×10 canvas
empty mister bottles
Water Brushes
gesso
Beacon Fast Finish Decoupage
Beacon 3-in-1

I gathered my supplies and my white hand-crafted flowers and doilies.

Before I got started gluing, I created a pink mist with the Watermelon Gelato. I sliced off some of the creamy Gelato into thin slivers and placed it into a mister bottle. I then added water and used a small stick to stir the mixture--helping to breakdown the Gelato further by mashing the stick against the side of the mister. When I thought it was dissolved enough, I gave the mister a good shake to disperse the color throughout.

Next I printed an outline of the letter "S" using my Publisher program. I choose the free font Big Top for my design. I sized the letter to about 650 points to fill the canvas. Once printed I tested out the flowers to see if they would fit nicely in the space I had.
Next I trimmed out my initial to make it easy to trace and laid out the entire canvas with the doilies, the "S" and the flowers. Once I liked the positioning, I traced the letter onto the canvas with a pencil.
With Beacon Fast Finish Decoupage I glued my doilies firmly to the canvas and let them dry.
Next I attached my flowers using Beacon 3-in-1. I started with the big flowers first and then added leaves and smaller flowers until I was happy with the placement.  I set the canvas aside to dry for a little bit.

It is now time to coat the ENTIRE canvas with gesso! This coating gives the WHOLE canvas the same finish so the different mediums will act similar over the entire surface. This also provides the opportunity to create some "bubbles" with the heat tool and add an extra fun texture.  But more on that later!

Now the REAL FUN begins! Get out your Gelatos! I started with Margarita Mix and Snow Cone and colored direct to canvas around the "S" concentrating the Snow Cone color on my doilies.. Next I spritzed water onto the canvas to activate the Gelatos and painted the color until smooth all over the canvas leaving the flowers alone. As the colors around the doilies blended, I added back over the top more of the Snow Cone to make them bluer.
Once I was happy with the background, I picked up the Gelato mister that I created above and sprayed the "S". I added color in layers, drying with my heat tool between layers. I allowed some over spray to stay on the canvas but if it got too thick I simply dabbed it with a dry cloth to pick up the extra.
While drying, I concentrated some heat around the doilies to bubble up the gesso that got stuck in the details of the die cut. I love these little bubbles that remained.
Once dry, I came back to the flowers with yellow and turquoise Faber-Castell Aquarelle pencils. I put yellow on some of the flower centers and yellow and turquoise on the leaves. I activated the watercolor with a water brush leaving the centers with a hint of yellow and the leaves with a hint of green. I finished with the coloring by adding a swipe of the Coconut white Gelato to the centers of the big flowers to bring in a small highlight!
You know I'm not done until I've added a little doodle. As a final touch, I doodled with my Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pen in Black Small in a few areas around the "S". These pens are perfect as they are waterproof India Ink and come in several sizes for your doodling needs!

I hope you enjoyed my project! Thank you for stopping by!

The ImPACT of Concussion

items used in the creation of this journal page:
book paper
paint pens, felt-tip and ball-point pens
white glue, Miracle Tape,gesso

On October 2nd of last year, while practicing basketball in his Jr. High Athletics class, my son sustained a concussion when he was hit with great force with the ball to the side of his head. His coach didn't see the accident and didn't feel the need to have him checked out. Later that day he complained of headache, we got him some medication when he was picked up at the end of the day. That evening he complained of headache, nausea and dizziness...I called the trainer and the coach numbers that we were given and emailed twice, no response. About 8:45 that night he began throwing up and we all left to head for the emergency room believing he had a concussion. A 5 hour wait [where 2 of the hours my son and I slept in the examination room] and broken CT Scanner meant the ER doctor tried to do a concussion exam on a very lethargic [due to sleep] 12 year old boy! She felt he probably had a concussion and gave me a list of symptoms to watch for. I was to return if they persisted and she recommended I call to make sure the CT Scanner was operational. The next day he stayed home and rested. We heard briefly from the trainer.

The next morning he went to class and started being symptomatic again. We picked him from school and had him rest. That evening we were back at the ER, received a scan and learned that thankfully he had no bleeding on the brain, but confirmed he was definitely concussed. The next morning we were at the trainers office for the ImPACT test.

When administered correctly, the ImPACT test can be an effective tool in determining if a patient has sustained a concussion and the severity of the concussion. This time however it had not been done correctly. The school was supposed to get a baseline from the students during the first two weeks of school. The coaches insured that the kids in the sports that were actively having contests [football] had their baseline tests and did not stress over the fact that the rest of the athletes [off season basketball] had not received tests--even in OCTOBER. Despite this fact my son's test confirmed that he had a rather severe concussion and we were sent to the sports medicine specialist to learn our course of action.

If you've never had the experience of seeing your child's every pleasure stripped away from them, I recommend you pass on that experience. It's heartbreaking. NO ELECTRONIC MEDIA OF ANY KIND--no television, no headphones, no cell phone, no Kindle, no computer, no video games of any kind, no calculator, no smartboards, no iPads, no fun. No sports of any kind. No gatherings where there will be a lot of people, a lot of noise, a lot of visual stimulus. No strenuous activities. no. nO. NO! For a 12 year old kid this is overwhelming. This was our fall : No football games, no Homecoming, no Train Show, no dance, no camporee, no shooting sports, nothing. One afternoon he looked at me with a tear in his eye and asked , "Can I play Legos or cars?" "Yes, you can." *sigh*

The next 8 months was complicated with struggles with the school about what my child was able to do, repeating myself often to the same people about his limitations as prescribed by the specialist. A second concussion was sustained in April and a whole new struggle began...this time with my son suffering from Post-Concussion Syndrome and requiring medication to help bring his brain back to normalcy. That is where this page comes from. The symptoms I know by heart. The NOs are part of my everyday life. As he was concussed or recovering from a concussion for 8 of the 9 months of this school year it came as no surprise that he would end the year with an incomplete.

As of yesterday, we are once again on a protocol to return to full activity. We are taking it slow. We are learning and relearning all that was lost with the memory problems during the summer so that we can show proficiency to move on to 8th grade. I'm not expecting problems there as he really is doing THAT much better with the new medicine.

about the journal page: I created this to share on the AlteredPages.com blog today and have showcased the supplies listed above from the store!! Be sure to show them some love! The writing in the top right are all the concussion symptoms--from memory. The writing on the bottom are all the restrictions to our lives to heal properly. The image with the 2 kids is a pocket and in the pocket is a personal note that I wrote to the me 9 months earlier telling myself that I was going to need strength and perseverance like never before, warning the younger me that I will find myself repeating myself and that people are just not going to understand, reminding myself that at times I will feel very alone but that I'm not alone and that I do have the strength to do this.

***almost done I promise! Thanks for making to the end of this LONG blog post***

Follow the Art | Another Mixed Media Challenge!

One of my favorite parts of art journalling and mixed media art is what I call "following the art." I have talked to the AlteredPages.com owner Jean about this a number of times over the past year. What happens is I will have a plan in my head of how I want something to progress and I will sit down to do that project but the end product that I had in mind is not where I end up...I "follow the art." That is how this project began. I initially wanted to attempt to replicate a technique done with other products and see if I could make it with products available at alteredpages.com. The main difference being that rather than using resin, I was using lacquer. Now before you go and say "well there's your problem," here's my reasoning...I can get the resin look with lacquer successfully, I think in this particular technique it should work in a similar fashion...so let's give it a whirl. Over on the AlteredPages.com blog today I go through the experimentation that occurred to create the focal piece on this page--please be sure to check it out!

Your Creative Dare is to think of FIVE WORDS Describing what your life means.  Your purpose!  What FIVE WORDS encompass what you want to be remembered for?
I have recently embraced the power of arting my words....I am arting this  year and focusing on the word BLOOM. It has been an amazing focus for me and has manifested many powerful and awesome opportunities for me this year so far! So...of course I was intrigued in writing down how I wanted to be remembered. But for me I had to first think of who I was...well that was quasi-easy : Mom, wife, daughter, friend and mentor. Hey look, 5 things--Sa-weet! But how did I want to be remembered...those things are terrific and I would be happy with that but I felt the challenge was looking for more adjective type words not noun type words...that was more difficult. I took it to my fan page. I was honored to see how others view me now...so many kind and wonderful warm loving things. I love my fans...they are awesome. I then asked my kids...surprisingly they never said, "mean, unfair, bossy...". Instead I got "Awesome, talented, smart." I love these people. They have a great mom to teach them to be so kind. With that in mind, and with the words of my fans in my mind, I came up with these five and I hope I can live up to that: Passionate, Creative, Kind, Honest and AWESOME! Thank you everyone for your input!
I dare you to incorporate the following elements from our Sponors:  The Crafter's Workshop Templates and Beacon Adhesives

I accept your dare and used 2 Crafter's Workshop Templates and my favorite Beacon 3n1.
